THE LATEST IN GLAUCOMA CARE
Posted 1/19/2003
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness throughout the world affecting millions of people. This is a disease of the eye that causes damage to the optic nerve, which is the pathway that carries the images we see to the brain. If left untreated, the disease can destroy the optic nerve leading to loss of vision.
We have for years checked for and monitored progression of glaucoma using the familiar eye pressure test, direct observation of the optic nerve and computerized visual field analysis. These tests will remain an important factor in glaucoma care, but we've added one of the latest hi-tech diagnostic instruments to this list.
Our newly purchased HRT II has taken our glaucoma detection and care to a new level. The HRT II is a highly advanced, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope. It generates extremely accurate detailed data and comprehensive analysis that simply is not possible to obtain with traditional methods. By scanning the optic nerve and adjacent nerve fiber layer the HRT II produces a three-dimensional map that not only detects glaucoma, but also provides essential information for monitoring the disease in follow-up exams.
The test is fast, safe, usually does not need dilation and is easy for the patient to do. We are delighted to add this highly advanced instrument to our office for the latest in patient care.
